Cristiano Ronaldo gets Real off to flying start in Champions League By: ThinkSpain , Wednesday, September 16, 2009
Real Madrid, one of the favourites for the Champions League title this year, have got their campaign off to a flying start with a comfortable 5-2 victory over FC Zurich.
Cristiano Ronaldo was on fine form, opening the scoring with a trademark free kick. With a goal apiece, Raúl and Higuain put the visitors well in control before the half-time whistle went.
When Zurich's Silvan Aegerter scored his team's second minutes after team-mate Xavier Margairaz had put away a penalty, it looked like a comeback was on the cards for the home team.
But Ronaldo made the most of some sloppy goalkeeping in the dying minutes to put the match out of the reach of the Swiss team, and Guti sealed the victory in injury time netting Real's 5th.
Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Chelsea also took maximum points from their respective matches this evening.
Elsewhere, Juventus thought they had done enough to see off Bordeaux, but were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw and Atlético Madrid were unable to see off APOEL Nicosia, considered to be one of the weakest teams in the Champions League, in a match that ended in a goalless draw.
